Rules

European Youth Orienteering Championship (in short EYOC) is the official event to award the titles of European Youth Champion in Orienteering. It is organised under the authority of the European Presidents meeting / IOF and the appointed Federation.

These special rules are valid from the 1st January 2003.

1. Principles for EYOC

The championship shall be organised in accordance with the following principles:
  • The best junior orienteerers of each European Federation shall be offered competitions of the highest technical quality
  • The event shall have a social, rather than a competitive atmosphere, letting young people exchange experience and find new friends
  • The costs of participation shall be kept low.

2. Event programme

The event is organised annually. The programme shall include a sprint distance final, a normal distance final and a relay for national teams with 3 legs. The programme shall be kept within 3 days (Friday - Sunday). The event shall follow the IOF Competition Rules unless otherwise is stated in these Special Rules. The dates of the EYOC shall be co-ordinated with other international junior events. Normally the event shall be organised in the last part of June or first week of July.

3. Event application and appointment of organiser

Any European Federation, full member of IOF may apply to organise EYOC. Applications shall reach the European Federation before January 31st 2 years prior to the event. The Meeting of European Presidents appoints the organiser. An IOF licensed controller from another federation shall be appointed to control the event.

4. Participation and Classes

Each Federation may enter 4 runners in each class. If the number of participating federations is more than 25, the maximum number from each federation shall be reduced to 3.

The EYOC is divided into 4 classes for the following age categories:

W - 16:

no more than 16 years old, reached by December 31st of the year of EYOC

W - 18:

no more than 18 years old, reached by December 31st of the year of EYOC

M - 16:

no more than 16 years old, reached by December 31st of the year of EYOC

M - 18:

no more than 18 years old, reached by December 31st of the year of EYOC


All entered runners may run both individual distances. In the relay mixed teams may be entered, but are not placed on the official result list. All teams shall start together.

5. Starting order, start interval - winning times

The start interval in the normal distance competition is 2 minutes and in Sprint 1 minute.
Starting time is drawn randomly in 4 starting groups. Competitors from the same federation shall not start consecutively.

D18 10-12 min. 40-45 min. 90 min.
H16 10-12 min. 40-45 min. 90 min.
H18 10-12 min. 45-50 min. 105 min.


6. Prizes

The organiser shall prepare and pay for specially designed medals for both the individual events (3 medals in each class / race) and relay (9 medals in each class) and diplomas for places 1 to 6. The Federation having the highest team score shall be awarded with a team prize.

7. Team Score

The score is calculated as sum of points of 3 competitions in all classes according to following rules.
  • In Sprint competition - 2 best result (in points) in each class.
  • In Normal competition - 2 best result (in points) in each class
  • In Relay - team points in each class
  • All competitors having the results with position below 55th place have 1 point.
  • All relay teams having the results, with position below 20th place have 5 point.
  • Competitors or teams with no results, have no points.
